Valuing collections

Do you need to have your collection valued? The following list of contacts and suggestions was compiled by Arlis/ANZ members.

Valuers
Check the list of Government approved valuers for the Cultural Gift Program. It is available here: http://www.arts.gov.au/tax_incentives/cgp (look in the top right section) and is updated regularly.

A larger library might have a valuation performed by the Australian Valuation Office.

Some resources
Cram, J. "Not an inexhaustible resource: valuation and depreciation of library collections". Australian Library Journal 46:4, p376-85. http://www.alia.org.au/~jcram/not_inexhaustible.html .

Horn, A., Epps, J., and Moncrieff, J. Financial Accounting and library collections: the bottom line (2006) http://www.deakin.edu.au/library/library-staff/publications/ahorn/Horn_Click061.pdf.

Valuation seminar papers/presentations from the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) Meeting, James Cook University, Cairns, 8-9 September 2003.

Have you considered having a sample of the collection valued? It can be very expensive to have the entire collection valued and this maybe an option for some libraries.

National Art School - new director and management

Some of you will be aware that NAS has been in a state of limbo for the past few years and our director departed in September last year.

Last week two announcements were made simultaneously that could see a very interesting year ahead for us. Our new director Professor Anita Taylor (from the University of the Arts, London) will join us in April and the NSW government has committed to funding us for the next five years under the joint management of the Ministries for Education and the Arts.

There's more info here on our school blog.
