Electronic databases
Posted October 3rd, 2008 by Laura Manchester
I've been asked to investigate possible electronic databases for our Bachelor of Design students. We had a trial of the five databases that EBSCO thought would be best for us, but they weren't quite what we were after - good for the business side but not the other areas. We currently have a trial of Art Full Text and I'm getting mixed reports from staff.
I was wondering if any other arts libraries out there had found any useful electronic databases that could be good for us.
The very general subject areas that we teach here are:
design, fashion, interiors, styling, art, architecture, history (of design), management (business management and event management), creative direction, graphic design/CAD, communications and photography.

Circulation Desk Suppliers
Posted August 15th, 2008 by Barbara Rendall
Has anyone recently purchased a circulation desk? Can anyone recommend a good supplier? I am thinking of replacing the desk here at Design Centre which is now showing its age. I would like to get three quotes before applying for funding.
Any suggestions of suppliers would be appreciated.

Acceptance of donations
Posted August 8th, 2008 by Christine Roberts
I would be interested to find out about other libraries' policies regarding book donations. Are donations accepted at all, and, if so, under what conditions? How do small libraries fund the costs involved in accepting, processing and integrating donations?

Shelving staff (especially in academic libraries)
Posted May 19th, 2008 by Kelly McKeon
Do you employ shelving staff?
If you are an academic library - do you employ students as shelvers?
Very basic library tasks like shelving and book covering take up a large amount of our time at NAS and I'm interested in how other libraries cope with this issue.
I think a little bit of shelving is good for everyone, to ensure staff know the collection, but the volume here is high and we are expensive shelvers.
Do other libraries have library assistants for this work, is it divided up among staff of various levels, or do you employ casual shelvers at a rate lower than library assistants?
I would be grateful for any input - please leave your comments here in the forum by clicking "Add new comment" below (so others can benefit) or email me directly if your comments are confidential (click on my name above, then click Contact).
Many thanks

Library Management Systems for Small Art Libraries
Posted March 26th, 2008 by Margaret Gor
Dear All
I am not quite sure if this the place for this discussion. But we at (MCA) Museum of Contemporary Art are trying to get quotes for Library Management System. Currently we use INMAGIC but the updates are a little costly for us to maintain so we are trying to find another system I was just wondering if anyone out there might have had( or is having) a similar dilemmas or experiences, ie. purchasing a new Library Management System for a smallish library. I know you must be all very busy so don't feel the need to reply only if your able.
Kind Regards,
Margaret Gor,
MCA Librarian
