NSW Chapter Minutes May 2009 Meeting

ARLIS/ANZ NSW CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES
11 May 2009 4.30 pm
National Art School Library
The meeting was preceded by a tour of the Sydney Jewish Museum and its library. Margaret Blackmore thanked Tinny Lenthen for organising the tour and showing the group the library.
The group also visited the National Art School Gallery exhibitions, a Field Guide from antlers to islands and What Large Art 1720-2009.

3. Minutes of Last Meeting
The minutes of the last meeting were accepted by Kelly McKeon and seconded by Sue Olive.
4. Matters Arising

5. Possible visit by Tony White, Head of Fine Arts Library, Indiana University
Tony White has emailed ARLIS/ANZ regarding a possible visit to Australia in June. He has requested visits to academic art libraries. National Art School, Sydney College of the Arts, UNSW College of Fine Arts and Australia Council libraries have all offered to host visits. Margaret will pass on Tony’s details.
Tony has also contacted Art Gallery of NSW and made an appointment to visit.

6. Article Ideas for Journal
Margaret encouraged members to contribute to the ARLIS/ANZ journal. Paige Luff is the current editor and has recently sent out an email request for contributions.

7. Member Reports
7.1 National Art School
Kelly McKeon reported that Anita Taylor has now commenced as the NAS Director.
7.2 Art Gallery of NSW
Steven Miller reported that he is currently acting as Head Librarian, AGNSW Research Library. The will be closed for six weeks from early July to mid August for OH and S related refurbishment.
Currently the AGNSW Research library is outsourcing for digitisation of their press clippings collection. They are also looking a digitising the Papunya Tula archive. The overall aim of digitisation is to enhance remote access of resources.
7.3 Sydney College of the Arts
Jen Hayes reported that Sydney College of the Arts had just completed an information literacy program.
The Callan Park Gallery, featuring Outsider Art, has just opened at the College. $1500 has been made available to the library to develop a collection supporting the gallery.
Jan is also advising on a digitisation project for the College.
7.4 Australian Film Television and Radio School
A new Head of Design is to be appointed at AFTRS and there will be a design course offered next year. The position of Library Manager has not been filled and is currently being shared between Debbie Sander and Elizabeth McDonald.
Some student short films are available online via the library catalogue.
7.4 Australia Council
Sally Kudma is currently the library manager while Lindsay Read is on maternity leave. Library staff are currently involved in re-developing the library website.
7.5 Margaret Blackmore
Margaret Blackmore has been on leave from her position at UNSW library and has been working on her PhD. She will be returning to her position in July.
7.6 Design Centre Enmore
Barbara reported that Design Centre Enmore library is involved in a pilot project of a copying/printing system at Sydney Institute. The library underwent minor refurbishment in April with the installation of a new circulation desk.
8. Other Business
8.1 Leona Geeves asked for advice regarding donations of personal historic photos. Pictures Australia was suggested as a possible repository.
8.2 Kelly McKeon requested feedback from the group regarding Bridgeman’s Art library
The meeting concluded at 5.20pm. Thanks to Kelly McKeon and the staff at the National Art School library for kindly hosting the meeting.
Next meeting suggested to be held at the Powerhouse Research Library.
Action: Margaret will investigate the possibility of holding the next meeting at the Powerhouse Museum Research library.

Tony White
Sorry I couldn't make the meeting.
Tony White will also be visiting the Whitehouse Institute of Design Library while he is in Sydney.
